A Sordid and Nasty Business

And totally counterproductive.  It appears that it may also be illegal.  I hope so.

Wired reports:

Drone Pilots Could Be Tried For ‘War Crimes,’ Law Prof Says

In a hearing Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform’s national security and foreign affairs panel, several professors of national security law seemed open to that argument. But there are still plenty of caveats, and the risks to U.S. drone operators are at this point theoretical: Unless a judge in, say, Pakistan, wanted to issue a warrant, it doesn’t seem likely. But that’s just one of the possible legal hazards of robotic warfare.

The thing is… these drone attacks seldom hit “enemies” and consistently hit innocent civilians.  Also, the targets are picked by the CIA and are outside the control of the U.S. military and rules of engagement parameters.  Indiscriminate killings of men, women and children for the occasional correct targeting of an “insurgent,” whatever that may be, are creating more of those “insurgents.”

And what if some other country used “rendition”  and threw these  illegal “enemy combatants” into their version of Gitmo and left them there indefinitely without access to the judicial process?   Oh, then they’d be like us.

Now wouldn’t that be something?
