Since It’s Sunday

I think it is fairly obvious that Pat Robertson is a distinct douche-nozzle among the plethora of religious douchebaggery that push their hatred, prejudice and bigotry on America.

President Obama signed the Hate Crimes bill into legislation this past Wednesday.  It was a move to protect many minorities from the bigotry and violence of intolerant people and to bring severe penalties for crimes against people based on their sexual orientation and was an extension of previous hate crime legislation.  One would think that this  progressive step towards reducing the blatant bigotry and manifestations of violence based on bigotry would be accepted with open arms by churches across America.

As CNN reported:

The hate crimes measure was named for Matthew Shepard, a gay Wyoming teenager who died after being kidnapped and severely beaten in October 1998, and James Byrd Jr., an African-American man dragged to death in Texas the same year.

One young man killed for being gay and another simply because of the color of his skin.  It seems that the message of Christianity that believers of that cult proffer is that of Jeusus’ love, compassion and forgiveness.  It makes one wonder then why they would respond so virulently against this legislation.  Here Pat Robertson misrepresents and distorts what this legislation is about and displays his overt bigotry at the same time:

Homophobic intolerant ministers and priests are so worried that they won’t be allowed to preach hate from their pulpits.

“The noose has tightened around the necks of Christians to keep them from speaking out on certain moral issues”

The distortions and outlandish reactions by the religious right are as interesting as they are wrong.  World Nuts Net Daily responded:

Congress Passes ‘Pedophile Protection Act’

The Southern Poverty Law Center addresses some of these outright lies and distortions:

Religious Right Lies About Hate Bill

They sure sound like they know what they’re talking about.

“A bill now before Congress (H.R. 1592/ S. 1105) would criminalize negative comments concerning homosexuality, such as calling the practice of homosexuality a sin from the pulpit, a ‘hate crime’ punishable by a hefty fine and time in prison,” says the American Family Association’s “Petition to Congress in Defense of Religious Freedom.”

“We must stop it before they send your grandma, your pastor, or you to jail for sharing your faith,” Faith2Action President Janet Folger writes in an April 18, 2007, press release.

“The proposed law would make it a crime to preach on Romans Chapter 1 or I Corinthians Chapter 6,” adds a June 14, 2007, “action alert” from the American Family Association. “Or even to discuss them in a Sunday School class.”

There’s just one thing. Every one of these statements is completely false.

The bible never seems to stop some of these religious figure heads from lying and distorting to spread fear and paranoia.  But not all Christian leaders are against this bill:

Nearly 1,400 ministers of all faiths have signed a letter of support for the bill. The bill is also supported by 26 state attorneys general and over 280 national law enforcement, professional, educational, civil rights, religious, and civic organizations, including the National District Attorneys Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Hopefully the case is  not that a “noose being placed around the necks of Christians” but the number of bigoted and intolerant Christians are diminishing in our population.  But…if members of the far right Christian community support any of the following then they do indeed have reason to be apprehensive:

Sec. 6: (A) IN GENERAL — Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law … willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of any person—
(i) shall be imprisoned not more than 10 years, fined in accordance with this title, or both; and
(ii) shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life, fined in accordance with this title, or both, if—
(I) death results from the offense; or
(II) the offense includes kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill.

And as the SPLC piece points out:

The bill also contains an explicit provision making it clear that the First Amendment rights of those who oppose homosexuality would be protected:

Sec. 8: Nothing in this Act, or the amendments made by this Act, shall be construed to prohibit any expressive conduct protected from legal prohibition by, or any activities protected by the free speech or free exercise clauses of, the First Amendment to the Constitution.

So, I do not know why the likes of Pat Robertson and his fellow gay bashing bigoted bible thumping buffoons have their panties in such a twist.  They can continue to preach their brand of intolerance all the want.  In fact, it seems that their might be a very real possibility that Jesus himself, had he existed, was gay.  This is evidenced by the saying:

I only wonder which is the Father and which is the Son?
