Country First?

It is amazing to me that the Republican Party which ran a platform of “Country First” for their 2008 bid for the presidency would express such glee at the United States losing to Brazil for the opportunity to host the 2016 Olympics.  That they would label this as a loss for Obama is somewhat secondary to the factors of my disgust.  This is glaring proof that the Teabbaging, Project 9-12 faux patriots are just a bunch of sore loserman conservative assholes that wrap themselves around the flag and our Constitution simply for the sake of opposing any and everything President Obama and the Democratic administration do.

Rachel Maddow highlights the Party that Hates America If It Helps Their Party:

It is interesting that in reality a major factor contributing to the loss of the United States hosting the 2016 Olympics might be rooted in policies of the last administration.  The NYT points out:

Chicago’s Loss: Is Passport Control To Blame?

Did Chicago lose the chance to host the 2016 Olympics because of airport security issues?

Among the toughest questions posed to the Chicago bid team this week in Copenhagen was one that raised the issue of what kind of welcome foreigners would get from airport officials when they arrived in this country to attend the Games. Syed Shahid Ali, an I.O.C. member from Pakistan, in the question-and-answer session following Chicago’s official presentation, pointed out that entering the United States can be “a rather harrowing experience.”

Perhaps the case of the Canadian Maher Arar weighed on the judges minds.  Arar was detained on a stop over in NYC in 2002 at JFK, taken to Syria as part of our “Extraordinary Rendition” program and tortured for a year then released.  No charges, guilty of nothing and no apologies.  Maybe incidents like that caused a body of international judges to decide the risk to global travelers was too great to trust to the barbaric practices of the “Land of the Free.”  Or, as U.S. Travel’s president says:

It’s clear the United States still has a lot of work to do to restore its place as a premier travel destination,” Roger Dow, U.S. Travel’s president, said in the statement released today. “When IOC members are commenting to our President that foreign visitors find traveling to the United States a ‘pretty harrowing experience,’ we need to take seriously the challenge of reforming our entry process to ensure there is a welcome mat to our friends around the world, even as we ensure a secure system.”

Regardless of the reason for our loss, it is a disgusting display of anti-Americanism that the Republicans have displayed in their reaction to that loss.  I am happy for Brasil and for South America.  It is the first time an Olympics will be hosted by a country from that Continent and I think they deserve the honor.  But I take no glee at our loss and the response by these petty conservatives that are an embarrassment to our country causes me to ask:

Why do Republicans hate America?
