Nah…it’ll never catch on.
Exxon Mobil Corp. said its fourth-quarter net income fell 33 percent to $7.82 billion, on lower oil prices in the last months of 2008, but managed to break its own profit record for a U.S. company.
Exxon, the world’s biggest nongovernmental oil company, reported a profit of $45.2 billion for 2008, in spite of fourth-quarter earnings dropping 33 percent from a year ago.
The previous record for annual profit was $40.6 billion, which it set in 2007.
Makes one wonder why they continue to get tax breaks. You can use the Google as a returning village idiot used to say…whoops:
OK…as a relocated village idiot used to say…and put in the terms Exxon Mobil- Tax Breaks and sit back and be pleasantly nauseated. And the thing is, these oil companies could not make these profits without the assistance of the US foreign policies and backing by the State Department, the US military and so forth. Obscene does not begin to cover what the profits raked in by these vultures truly are. Their profits are built on gunboat diplomacy, human misery, corruption and state sponsored terrorism. They have plundered and pillaged from Alaska to Venezuela, these oil companies and their never ending series of “record profits.”
Nationalize them. Use their profits for alternative fuel research and development. Let the fat cats of the industry work for a living and quit being subsidized by American tax payers.
I do not practice Kendo, but I do appreciate the elevation of movement beyond technique. A bit of Kendo understanding helps here but even without it you can appreciate the control and mastery exhibited in this display. Also, the calm and centered presence displayed here allows this master to dominate younger, stronger and faster opponents.
Very nice. Very inspiring. As they say, the trouble with youth is it is wasted on the young.
And set them adrift.
Over at the Huffington Post was this:
Rank-and-file Congressional Democrats had been willing to give Republicans the business tax cuts and other provisions they wanted in the stimulus. That is, up until every single one voted against the bill on the House floor Wednesday.
Now, in both the House and the Senate, angry members are lobbying Democratic leaders to yank those tax breaks back.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was asked Thursday by the Huffington Post why the business tax cuts, whose purpose was to garner Republican support, would be left in the bill if no Republicans supported it regardless.
“That’s what my members ask me,” said Pelosi. “It wasn’t something that was suggested [by Democrats]. It was a heavy lift for our members, but they understood that it has a benefit and were willing to support it.”
So far, she said, she has been resistant to removing the cuts from the package. “It’s something that we can live with,” she said. “I can’t answer why they wouldn’t vote for this even though their main net-operating-loss carry-back suggestion was part of the tax cuts.”
Why walk on eggshells with the opposition? Why coddle the party that can only obstruct and push for the types of policies that put us in the position we are in now? Their policies of smaller government and less regulation are why there were not enough regulations or regulators to control the rampant bad lending practices of the now worthless banks that are sucking us all down with them. Less regulation and government? No. I think we have seen enough of laissez faire capitalism on steroids. They did not police themselves. They did not function better without a cop on the block. Their tax cuts for the top few percent of Americans did not create jobs. Leave them to strain impotently against their leashes and bark at the moon through their mouthpieces like Limbaugh. You are talking about a party that impeached a president for a personal sexual affair and whose replacement trampled our constitution and pushed this nation over a cliff financially. There is no upside to “bipartisanship” at this time and the sooner this administration realizes it, the sooner the business of the people can be done. The overwhelming concern of voters in 2008 was the economy. The people obviously did not think that the Republicans were competent enough to correct the mistakes they made. They were given a chance to show their willingness to cooperate with Obama on the House version of the stimulus bill and chose instead to circle the wagons of obstinance.
Ya Basta! Enough.
Make me think of this:
Maybe it is this:
Pope Benedict XVI’s rehabilitatation of a British bishop who denies that millions of Jews died in Nazi gas chambers has alarmed Catholics who fear it risks dealing a fatal blow to the inter-faith dialogue promoted by his predecessor.
Over the weekend the Pope issued a decree welcoming back into the Roman Catholic Church Richard Williamson, 68, and three other breakaway bishops excommunicated by John Paul II in 1988. The bishops had been ordained without Vatican permission by the renegade French archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who rejected the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
Considering that it is possible that the holocaust might never have happened were it not for Pope Pius XII neutralizing the German Catholics which helped Hitler gain his power base and was also complicit in validating Hitler by his patronage, the Catholic Church apparently just doesn’t get it. Anti-semitism is a Catholic creation and this recent act will just invigorate the twisted sorts who see the Jews as the killers of their mythical God man.
Renzo Gattegna, head of the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy, said the rehabilitation of Bishop Williamson was “terrible not only for Jewish people but for the whole of humanity”. He said that Italian Jews would refuse to take part in joint prayers with Christians on Tuesday marking Holocaust Day, known in Italy as “The Day of Memory”.
Some Vatican officials are also saying privately that although the Pope’s stated aim was to unite the Church by bringing the rebels back into the fold, his move would have the opposite effect. “The Church will pay a price for this” one Vatican prelate said. “The Pope is undermining the legacy of John Paul II.”
Benedict’s actions are also reviving his old nickname when he was Cardinal Ratzinger — that of the “Panzerkardinal”, known for his hardline conservatism as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
I suppose since his Popiness was a Hitler Youth member that being called the Panzerkardinal was quite fitting. And this is an intriguing perspective:
Bishop Williamson, who has said that the Vatican is controlled by Satan and that the Jews are bent on world domination, reiterated in a broadcast last week on Swedish television that the historical evidence was “hugely against six million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler. I believe there were no gas chambers”.
He added: “I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, but none of them by gas chambers.”
Prosecutors in Regensburg in Germany, where the interview took place — and where the Pope once studied and taught — have opened an inquiry. Holocaust denial is an offence under German law.
I would say that even if it were only 200,000 to 300,000 murdered Jews that it was a holocaust regardless of whether six million Jews were the actual number or not. Here is a good piece on this subject from Salon.
It makes for an interesting read. And one more thing that has always bothered me. If Jebus was supposed to come to earth and die for our sins so his father, who was really himself, could cleanse us of our sins because his dad who was really him couldn’t do it any other way for all his power, then it seems that if the Jews were responsible for him being charged, convicted and executed then they were carrying out God’s will and should be heralded as heroes. Of course, that is what happens when you deal with conflicting mythologies. It gets a little ickybalookey.
Anyway, the Pope is a douchebag and it is immaterial to me whether he un-excommunicates fellow pointy hatted delusional christards or not. It is just another sign, though, that religion is not benign and when one divests oneself of reason and invests ones faith in a system based on myths, authority and control, then the uglier side of humanity will rear its head and people will get hurt. Sometimes emotionally and sometimes by the millions in gas chambers.
Christians. They’re so…Christiany.
Sir David Attenborough has revealed that he receives hate mail from viewers for failing to credit God in his documentaries. In an interview with this week’s Radio Times about his latest documentary, on Charles Darwin and natural selection, the broadcaster said: “They tell me to burn in hell and good riddance.”
Telling the magazine that he was asked why he did not give “credit” to God, Attenborough added: “They always mean beautiful things like hummingbirds. I always reply by saying that I think of a little child in east Africa with a worm burrowing through his eyeball. The worm cannot live in any other way, except by burrowing through eyeballs. I find that hard to reconcile with the notion of a divine and benevolent creator.”
And don’t forget cancer, AIDS and male pattern baldness.
Attenborough went further in his opposition to creationism, saying it was “terrible” when it was taught alongside evolution as an alternative perspective. “It’s like saying that two and two equals four, but if you wish to believe it, it could also be five … Evolution is not a theory; it is a fact, every bit as much as the historical fact that William the Conqueror landed in 1066.”
Christians never let facts get in the way of hateful behavior. One book written in the bronze age trumps all modern knowledge, observation and evidence. And their God manifests Itself by commanding Its followers to act like assholes because It enjoys the confusion and strife. You gotta love a God like that….
It smells sweet.
A bit about the Lilly Ledbetter Act. John McCain was against it, though he missed the vote on it he said he would have voted against it. Here we see him taking a 14 year old girl to task on it:
The Republicans filibustered it in 2008 preventing it from going to the floor of the Senate for an up or down vote. The conservative Supreme Court ruled against it as it was written and sided with corporations and their ability to discriminate against women, people of color and with disabilities.
It will be the first law that President Obama signs and a clear repudiation of the mean spirited and corporations over people attitude of the Republican Party. Equal Pay for equal work. Why would anyone be against that?
Tomorrow, President Obama will sign his first bill into law — the Lilly Ledbetter Act. The House passed this bill on January 9th – roll call here. The Senate passed this bill on January 22nd – roll call here. I feel like we should celebrate this vote, but at the same time I feel a great sadness that it has taken this long and that we still have so far to go to true equality. At the moment, I will side more heavily with feelings of celebration, excitement, and relief. We have a President who proudly calls himself a Feminist and tomorrow he will sign a bill that will help women get fair pay. Finally.
President Obama lets his feminist side run loose and shows the Republicans that things…well they are a changin’. Right on!
